The Human heart and mind is seemingly built for dualities- Hell is accepted because there is a Heaven, Punishment seems unfair unless there is also Reward, and Hate pushes people to search for Love. What, then, do we do with experiences that don’t fit into this Yes/No On/Off worldview? Many people are redefining their terms of gender, sexuality, career, and family but they still cling to the idea that anything not meeting expectations in the present tense is immediately negative. Any sense of waiting, pausing or resetting is something to fight vehemently against… and maybe, in doing so, we are missing out on opportunity.
Purgatory, in an abstract sense, is that great existential pause; A time of neither Spiritual, Physical or Emotional ascension or descent, it was a level playing field where the soul waited for the next thing, whatever that may be. It was the place to work out and let go of the prior life, and ready one’s self for the next. In that broad stroke, Purgatory is very much the world of today- we have walked through fire and turmoil and are waiting for the page to turn, hoping it’s better and believing that it couldn’t be worse. And even if it’s Hell, it will at least be a different shade of Hell than the last, and that somehow comforts us. The songs on this album were all born of that center place between one cataclysm and the unknown. They tend to be more minimal, more experimental in some ways and more willing to linger on the unsure emotion than my prior work. I hope you can find some catharsis and closure in the music found here, and I hope it finds you well as you prepare for the next life, the next day or the next moment in time.TRH
